Day 1 – Victoria: Gardens, Harbours, and Heritage

Start your Vancouver Island adventure in beautiful Victoria, where fall colours, seaside charm, and layers of history create a perfect first impression.

Morning

Ease into island time with a stroll through Beacon Hill Park. This lush downtown green space comes alive in fall, when golden leaves carpet the walking paths and ducks glide lazily across Goodacre Lake. From the park’s oceanside cliffs, you’ll catch panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains, sometimes even framed by mist and morning fog.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon discovering Victoria’s storied past right in the city’s walkable downtown core. These are some of the top heritage sites to visit (and all within easy reach of one another):

The Fairmont Empress Hotel – This iconic landmark overlooking the Inner Harbour has been welcoming guests since 1908. Step inside to admire its opulent architecture or treat yourself to the delightful afternoon tea experience.

BC Legislature Buildings – Just across the street, these grand neo-baroque structures are home to British Columbia’s provincial government. Free guided tours are offered daily, or you can simply wander the grounds and admire the architecture. It's especially beautiful when the late-afternoon light hits the dome.

St. Ann’s Academy – A former convent and school turned heritage site, this peaceful spot showcases 19th-century craftsmanship, serene gardens, and a chapel that feels like stepping back in time.

Christ Church Cathedral – Known for its soaring Gothic arches and kaleidoscope of stained glass, it’s one of Canada’s most impressive churches.

Evening

Settle in for dinner at 10 Acres Bistro, known for its farm-to-table menu, or The Courtney Room, one of the most celebrated restaurants in the city.

Stay

  • 🏨 Magnolia Hotel & Spa – Recently named the #1 Hotel in Canada by Conde Nast Traveller, this boutique downtown gem is pure luxury. Expect elegant rooms, impeccable service, and thoughtful touches like curated “Trail Maps” that guide guests to Victoria’s best hidden spots.
  • Alternate Option: Huntingdon Manor Hotel – Located just steps from the Inner Harbour, this charming heritage-style property offers cozy rooms, complimentary breakfast, and old-world character at a friendlier price point.

Day 2 – Victoria: Castles, Haunts, and Hidden Gems

After a restful night in the heart of the city, spend your second day exploring Victoria’s fascinating mix of history and a touch of the supernatural. Autumn’s moody light and misty evenings make it the perfect season for this deeper dive into the capital’s past.

Morning

Begin your day at Craigdarroch Castle, an architectural masterpiece that once belonged to coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. The four-storey mansion is filled with ornate woodwork, stained glass, and stories of one of B.C.’s wealthiest families. As you climb the winding staircase, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the city framed by fall foliage.

Next, visit the Emily Carr House, the childhood home of one of Canada’s most celebrated artists and authors. The heritage home offers a personal glimpse into Carr’s early life and inspiration. It's a must-see for anyone interested in art or local history.

Afternoon

Head back toward the downtown core to explore Old Town Victoria, where cobbled lanes and restored heritage buildings now house boutiques, galleries, and cafés. Take time to browse Fan Tan Alley, Canada’s narrowest street, located in Chinatown, the oldest Chinatown in Canada and the second oldest in North America.

Stop for lunch at Bao Victoria or Nubo Japanese Tapas, both local favourites that bring warmth and flavour to cooler fall days.

After lunch, pop into Munro’s Books, a historic bookstore housed in a former bank building with coffered ceilings and stained-glass windows. This spot is easily considered one of the most beautiful bookshops in Canada. Across the street, you’ll find Rogers’ Chocolates, another Victoria icon dating back to 1885.

Evening

As night falls, embrace Victoria’s spookier side with a Ghostly Walks Tour through downtown. Led by local storytellers, these guided walks reveal eerie tales of haunted hotels, tragic shipwrecks, and mysterious happenings. It's the perfect blend of history and goosebumps.

If you prefer something more relaxed, take a twilight stroll along the Inner Harbour Causeway, where street performers and glowing streetlamps reflect off the calm water.

End your evening with a nightcap at Clive’s Classic Lounge inside the Chateau Victoria or a cozy dessert at Q at the Empress.

Stay: Same as above.

Goldstream

Day 3 – Parksville: Rivers, Waterfalls & Coastal Comfort

Today you’ll trade city streets for forest trails, rushing rivers, and ocean air. The drive north from Victoria to Parksville is one of the most scenic stretches on Vancouver Island, especially in the fall.

Morning

Just 25 minutes outside Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park is one of the best places on the island to witness the salmon run. From mid-October through mid-November, thousands of chum salmon return from the ocean to spawn in the shallow river.

Wander the easy trails that follow the riverbank, where you’ll often see gulls, eagles, and even the occasional black bear taking advantage of the seasonal feast. It’s an unforgettable scene.

Before leaving the park, make a quick stop at Niagara Falls (yes, we have one too!). This slender 47-metre cascade drops dramatically into a mossy gorge and is especially photogenic in the fall light. This one requires shoes that will withstand getting wet, as you'll need to access it through a tunnel.

Late Morning

Continue north along the Malahat Highway, where winding mountain roads reveal breathtaking views over the Saanich Inlet and distant Gulf Islands. Pull over at Malahat Summit Viewpoint for a quick photo, or, if time allows, stretch your legs at the Malahat SkyWalk.

This spot features a 250-metre spiral walkway that rises above the treetops. The panoramic views from the top are spectacular year-round, but there’s something extra special about them when the forests below are ablaze with fall colour. It's also a bonus that the crowds will be minimal!

Afternoon

After crossing into the mid-Island region, make your way toward Parksville, where forested trails and wide beaches welcome you with open arms.

Spend the afternoon exploring Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, where two waterfalls thunder through a mossy canyon surrounded by lush rainforest. The easy loop trail offers several viewpoints and bridges, all wrapped in autumn’s fiery hues.

If time permits, continue 20 minutes north to Little Qualicum Falls, another series of spectacular cascades set among towering evergreens. Fall rain brings both parks to life, filling the air with the soothing roar of rushing water.

Evening

End your day with a sunset stroll along Parksville Beach, where the tide stretches out for what feels like miles. The evenings are calm and quiet this time of year, and you might just catch eagles perched on driftwood scanning for their next meal.

For dinner, head to Bayside Restaurant & Lounge, where panoramic windows overlook the water and the menu highlights the island’s bounty. Think wild-caught salmon, local vegetables, and perfectly seared scallops. Or Kalvas the Log House, a cozy classic specializing in seafood and steaks.

Stay

🏨 The Beach Club Resort – Parksville’s premier oceanfront retreat, perfectly positioned at the edge of the city’s sandy shoreline. Select rooms offer stunning ocean views, many with private balconies and fireplaces ideal for chilly autumn nights. Guests love the indoor pool and hot tub overlooking the water, the on-site restaurant (known for its fresh, locally sourced cuisine), and the direct access to Parksville’s scenic boardwalk.

Alternate Option: Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort – A perfect fall escape with rustic cabins, crackling fireplaces, and the indulgent Grotto Spa, ideal for warming up after a day outdoors.

Large waves crashing on the rocky shoreline of Tofino. Storm watching in Tofino is a spectacular winter activity.

Day 4 – Ucluelet: Wild Pacific Energy

The road west to Ucluelet is one of the most unforgettable drives on Vancouver Island. It leads you from tranquil beaches through towering rainforest to a rugged coast where the Pacific puts on its most dramatic show.

Morning

Leave Parksville after breakfast and head west on Highway 4. Your first stop: Cathedral Grove, a spellbinding stand of Douglas fir and red cedar inside MacMillan Provincial Park.

Take the short boardwalk loop trail on the same side you parked on and marvel at the giant trees, some over 800 years old. For leaf peeping, head down to the Cameron River, where large maples hang over the riverbank.

Continue west, passing through the quaint logging town of Port Alberni. If you need a leg-stretch or coffee break, stop at Harbour Quay, where local cafés and restaurants overlook the inlet.

Afternoon

By early afternoon, you’ll reach Ucluelet, a coastal village where the rainforest meets the sea.
Head straight to the Wild Pacific Trail, a must-do for any visitor. The Lighthouse Loop section is a 3.1-kilometre coastal walk with incredible viewpoints of Barkley Sound and Amphitrite Lighthouse.

In fall, storm-season waves crash against the black rocks below, sending sea spray high into the air. It's a raw display of nature’s power. Keep your eyes peeled for sea lions, otters, and the occasional migrating grey whale passing offshore.

Late Afternoon

If the weather turns wild (and you secretly hope it does), find a sheltered spot along the cliffs or at your accommodation and watch the show. The West Coast’s storm-watching season typically begins in late October and lasts through February. Bring a rain jacket, a thermos of something warm, and settle in for the thunder of the surf. It's truly hypnotic.

For a gentler adventure, explore Big Beach Park, where driftwood piles along the sand and interpretive signs share stories of the region’s shipwreck history.

Evening

After a day of forest walks and ocean spray, treat yourself to a well-earned meal at Pluvio Restaurant + Rooms. This award-winning fine-dining restaurant celebrates the region’s ingredients, such as foraged mushrooms, line-caught fish, and dishes that blend creativity with comfort. Reservations are highly recommended.

For a more casual alternative, Frankie’s Resto-Bar offers excellent seafood, local beers, and warm west-coast hospitality in a relaxed setting just a short walk from the harbour.

Stay

🌊 Black Rock Oceanfront Resort – Perched dramatically on the cliffs above the Pacific, this resort is the place for storm watching in Ucluelet. Floor-to-ceiling windows, deep soaker tubs, and private balconies make it easy to watch the wild waves in comfort.

The on-site Currents Restaurant serves upscale coastal cuisine with unbeatable ocean views, while the Drift Spa provides the ultimate post-storm pampering. Whether you’re sipping wine by the fire or listening to waves crash against the rocks below, it’s an unforgettable West Coast experience.

Alternate Option: The Cabins at Terrace Beach – Tucked in a quiet cove near the Wild Pacific Trail, these cozy wood cabins offer a more rustic, intimate stay. Each one is just steps from the beach and surrounded by towering evergreens. This spot is perfect for travellers who want to feel completely immersed in nature.

Day 5 – Tofino: Surf, Shorelines & Cozy Cafés

Today’s the day to savour the rhythm of the West Coast. Just a short drive from Ucluelet, Tofino captures everything people dream about when they picture fall on Vancouver Island, including wild beaches, stormy skies, local art, and warm hospitality.

Morning

It’s only a 40-minute drive from Ucluelet to Tofino, but you’ll want to take your time. This stretch of Highway 4 winds through old-growth rainforest and opens up to some of the most breathtaking coastal views in Canada.

Start your day with a stop at Long Beach, part of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, where the sand stretches for kilometres and the waves roll endlessly in. In the fall, you’ll often have the beach almost to yourself, aside from a few surfers and shorebirds dancing in the spray.

If you have a Parks Canada Discovery Pass, you’ll be set to access all of Tofino’s park beaches today.

From there, stop at Schooner Cove or Combers Beach, both reached via short forest trails. Even on grey, misty mornings, these beaches are magic. They showcase the kind of wild, cinematic beauty that makes you feel small in the best possible way.

Afternoon

Head into Tofino Village, a lively little town that’s part surf culture, part creative hub. Stroll along Campbell Street, where you’ll find local boutiques, Indigenous art galleries, and cozy cafés perfect for escaping the drizzle.

For lunch, grab a bowl of seafood chowder at The Schooner Restaurant, or head to Rhino Coffee House for something quick and casual.

If the rain moves in (and it often does), take it as an invitation to slow down. Pop into House of Himwitsa for locally carved masks and jewellery, or Merge for west-coast-inspired goods for your body and home.

Late Afternoon

Fall is storm-watching season in Tofino, too, and nowhere showcases it better than Chesterman Beach or Cox Bay. Both beaches offer dramatic surf, with wind and waves pounding against dark volcanic rock. Bring a raincoat, a warm drink, and settle in for a show of pure West Coast theatre.

If you’re after something more indulgent, book a treatment at Ancient Cedars Spa at Wickaninnish Inn. The spa’s ocean-view cedar rooms and soothing aromas create an experience that feels entirely in tune with nature. Indulgent? Yes, but totally worth it!

Evening

End your last night with a memorable meal that celebrates the coast’s seasonal bounty.

  • Wolf in the Fog – A Tofino institution offering inventive dishes made with locally foraged and caught ingredients (their crispy potato-crusted oysters are a must).
  • Shelter Restaurant – A relaxed favourite with a glowing fireplace, perfect for rainy nights. Try the wild salmon burger or the daily seafood special.
  • If you’d rather grab something casual, Tacofino’s original food truck is still one of the best spots in town for a quick bite with a side of surf-town atmosphere.

Stay

You’ll be returning to Ucluelet tonight, which makes for an easy and scenic evening drive back along the coast. It's just long enough to digest dinner and replay your day’s adventures in your mind.

If you prefer to base yourself in Tofino, here are my recommendations:

🌊 Pacific Sands Beach Resort – A west-coast dream come true, Pacific Sands sits right on Cox Bay and offers front-row seats to storm season. Choose from ocean-view suites or cozy beach houses, all with full kitchens, fireplaces, and picture windows overlooking the surf.

Guests can join guided beach walks, take surf lessons, or simply watch the waves crash from their private balcony. It’s peaceful, wild, and wonderfully comfortable, and the perfect Tofino home base for fall.

Alternate Option: Long Beach Lodge Resort – Just down the beach, this stylish retreat blends luxury and adventure. Its Great Room restaurant serves farm-fresh coastal fare beside towering windows that frame the roaring Pacific, and the outdoor hot tubs offer unbeatable storm-watching views.
