Day 1: Victoria’s Classics for Curious Kids

Start your adventure in B.C.’s capital with a day full of interactive museums, parks, and quirky indoor fun.

Beacon Hill Park & Children’s Farm

Wander through vibrant gardens, peaceful ponds, and wide open green spaces where peacocks roam free. Beacon Hill Park is a gem for families of all ages. Spanning more than 200 acres, this free city park offers ocean views, colourful flowerbeds, and winding trails perfect for leisurely strolls.

Kids will love the two playgrounds, the seasonal splash pad, and the beloved Beacon Hill Children’s Farm, where you can meet goats, pigs, and other friendly animals (a small admission fee applies). One of our favourite traditions? Watching the famous “goat run” as the animals dash out to greet the day. It’s guaranteed to make everyone smile!

On a recent visit, my teenage daughter and I wandered the flower-filled pathways, reminiscing about her younger days at the petting zoo. No matter how old your kids are, there’s something timeless and joyful about this park.

Miniature World

Step into a realm of tiny wonders. Intricate dioramas showcase fairy‑tale castles, historic battles, and even a fully working circus in miniature. Located in the Empress Hotel, this delightful museum is fun for all ages, especially those fascinated by intricate craftsmanship.

The exhibits found in Miniature World showcase detailed scenes of history, fantasy, and imagination. Each display is brought to life with lights and some even with moving parts, captivating visitors.

Visitors typically spend one to two hours exploring this museum. The amount of time required can vary depending on individual interests and the level of detail one wants to examine in the displays.

Royal BC Museum

A must‑visit for all ages. Explore a life‑size woolly mammoth, stroll a turn‑of‑the‑century street, and dive into B.C.’s natural history through engaging exhibits.

The Royal BC Museum is one of Canada's premier cultural institutions. Its engaging exhibits showcase British Columbia's natural and human history. Highlights include Indigenous galleries, First Nations artifacts, and the immersive “Old Town” exhibit, which recreates a 19th-century street scene.

The average time to explore this museum is two to three hours. However, you could easily spend more time if you're interested in learning about the exhibits in detail, or less time if you're on a tighter schedule.

Book your tickets in advance and skip the lines!

Victoria Bug Zoo

If your kids love bugs or want to conquer their fear, this is a hit. The Victoria Bug Zoo is a fun and educational stop. It's home to a fascinating collection of insects and arachnids from around the world. Through interactive displays, visitors learn about the world of bugs and get a closer look at some truly unique creatures.

Even if you don't like viewing big bugs (like me), I highly recommend putting this spot on your Victoria itinerary. You typically only need about an hour to explore this museum.

🍴 Suggested Day 1 Food Flow

  • Breakfast: Beacon Hill Drive-In
  • Lunch: Red Fish Blue Fish
  • Afternoon Snack: Sweet treat along Government Street
  • Dinner: Frankie's Modern Diner (huge portions, kids' menu and harbour views).

Family-Friendly Stays in Victoria

For a memorable family stay in Victoria, I recommend the following two options.

Inn at Laurel Point

This harbourfront hotel sits on a six-acre peninsula, offering space for kids to roam and incredible views. Their “Family Friendly Stays” program includes in-room kids’ tents, scavenger hunts, board games, step stools, and more.

The glass-walled indoor pool is always a hit after a day of sightseeing, and it’s just a short walk to major attractions like the Royal BC Museum and Beacon Hill Park. Parents appreciate the serene setting and thoughtful touches.

Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites

A more budget-friendly option right in the heart of downtown. This hotel features spacious one- and two-bedroom suites with kitchenettes, plus a heated indoor pool and rooftop restaurant.

It’s within easy walking distance of family favourites like Miniature World and the Bug Zoo, making it a convenient and comfortable choice for exploring the city with kids.

Day 2: Gardens, Butterflies & Marine Life Near Victoria

Today is all about wonder and discovery just beyond the city. Explore world-famous gardens, lush tropical ecosystems, and fascinating marine life—all within easy driving distance from your hotel in Victoria.

Butchart Gardens (Brentwood Bay)

A floral wonderland for all ages. Ride the antique carousel, wander themed gardens, and enjoy seasonal fireworks and light displays.

The world-renowned Butchart Gardens, about a 30-minute drive from downtown Victoria, are a must-see. Wander through 55 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, including the Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, and the tranquil Japanese Garden (my favourite).

It takes approximately three hours to wander around the entire garden. So, if you're hungry, consider eating lunch at their onsite restaurant, the Blue Poppy (it's pretty decent).

Victoria Butterfly Gardens

Located just minutes from Butchart Gardens, this indoor tropical rainforest is home to over 70 species of free-flying butterflies from around the world. The lush, climate-controlled environment also houses exotic birds, poison dart frogs, flamingos, koi fish, and even turtles. Kids love spotting butterflies as they flutter past, land on shoulders, or gather at feeding stations.

With winding paths, a waterfall, and hundreds of tropical plants, the experience is both educational and enchanting. You’ll also find interpretive signage, a small insectarium, and friendly staff available to answer curious questions.

It only takes about an hour to enjoy this attraction, but it's well worth the stop.

Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea (Sidney)

Located on the waterfront in downtown Sidney, just a short drive from both Butchart Gardens and the Butterfly Gardens, the Shaw Centre offers an immersive look into the rich marine ecosystems of the Salish Sea.

This compact, thoughtfully designed aquarium features over 35 aquarium habitats and more than 3,500 marine creatures, including jellyfish, wolf eels, salmon, sea urchins, and a giant Pacific octopus. One of the highlights for families is the hands-on touch pool, where kids can gently interact with sea stars, anemones, and urchins under the guidance of knowledgeable volunteers.

The visit typically takes around 45 to 60 minutes, making it a perfect stop before dinner.

🍴 Suggested Day 2 Food Flow

Day 3: En Route to Parksville – Wildlife & Wonders

It’s time to leave Victoria behind and start the journey north, but not without a few exciting stops along the way. This day is perfect for both animal lovers and thrill-seekers.

Malahat SkyWalk

Start your day with a scenic drive to this forested adventure. The Malahat Skywalk is a stunning outdoor attraction offering visitors a unique experience combining breathtaking views and an immersive nature adventure.

The Skywalk features a fully-accessible 600-metre elevated wooden walkway through a lush forest canopy, leading to a spiral tower that rises 32 metres above the treetops. At the top, visitors are rewarded with 360-degree views of the Cowichan Valley, Saanich Peninsula, Gulf Islands, and even Mount Baker in Washington State on clear days.

To make the attraction even more fun, there is an adventure net at the top and a slide option, making the descent as exhilarating as the climb.

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to spend at this attraction.

The Raptor Centre (Duncan)

For an up-close experience with local raptors like hawks, eagles, owls and other majestic birds of prey, head to the Raptor Centre. This immersive centre is both educational and entertaining, and one of my favourite Cowichan Valley attractions.

The Raptor Centre is a fascinating wildlife attraction dedicated to the conservation, education, and rehabilitation of birds of prey. Visitors can get up close to various raptors, including eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, and vultures, and learn about their importance to the ecosystems.

One of the centre's highlights is its engaging flight demonstrations, where you can watch these majestic birds soar and display their hunting skills. The centre also offers unique opportunities, like handling sessions, for more personal interactions with the birds.

A typical visit to The Raptors can range from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the experiences chosen. I highly recommend timing your arrival to coincide with one of their flying demonstrations. (Summer flying demonstrations are at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm).

Hand of Man Museum (Maple Bay)

A short drive from the Raptor Centre, you will find this quirky and fascinating museum packed with natural history, cultural artifacts, and oddities. Think massive T-Rex skulls, tribal masks, and a wealth of antique curiosities.

This unique museum explores how humans have shaped our environment and society through diverse exhibits, ranging from ancient artifacts and historical tools to modern artistic expressions.

Insider tip: The kids get their own iPad scavenger hunt, which helps keep them engaged the entire time!

It takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to go through this museum. However, some visitors might want to spend several hours or even return multiple times to explore the diverse collection fully.

WildPlay Nanaimo

Climb, swing, and zipline your way through the forest. WildPlay Nanaimo is a heart-pounding outdoor adventure park set just south of Nanaimo, offering treetop obstacle courses, zip‑lines, swings, bungee jumps, and a “What’s-to-Fear” 40‑ft plunge.

The park features a dedicated Monkido Kids Course for ages 5–12, where younger climbers navigate rope ladders, cargo nets, swinging logs, and small ziplines through the trees. For older kids and adults, the Classic and Extreme courses pack in even more thrills.

Whether your family sticks to the kid course or levels up to ziplines and jumps, WildPlay delivers a mix of nature, challenge, and pure fun. It’s easy to spend 2-3 hours here, depending on how many adventures you choose to do.

Heads up: It’s a good idea to book ahead, especially in summer.

🍴 Suggested Day 3 Food Flow

  • Mid-morning snack/lunch: Grab pastries and coffee or an early lunch at the Duncan Garage Cafe
  • Afternoon break: Grab snacks en route to Nanaimo

Day 4: Exploring Parksville – Beaches, Forests & Goats on the Roof

Spend your final day soaking up the best of Parksville’s outdoor charm, from sandy beach walks and mini golf to waterfall trails and quirky local icons. It’s the perfect mix of relaxed fun and gentle adventure for all ages.

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park

Begin your day with an adventure to Rathtrevor Beach, one of Parksville’s most iconic family-friendly destinations. At low tide, the ocean recedes dramatically, revealing vast stretches of warm, sandy flats that are ideal for beachcombing, sandcastle building, and discovering tidal pools.

The gentle slope of the beach makes it especially safe for little ones, while older kids will enjoy running along the endless shoreline. The surrounding forest offers shady trails perfect for a peaceful walk or a quick escape from the sun.

Riptide Lagoon Adventure Golf

Just minutes from Rathtrevor Beach, Riptide Lagoon offers two beautifully landscaped 18-hole mini golf courses surrounded by waterfalls, rock walls, and winding streams. The pirate- and west coast–themed layouts provide just enough challenge to keep older kids engaged while still being fun for younger players.

With its convenient location and well-maintained grounds, it’s a great way to enjoy a bit of playful competition before continuing your Parksville adventures.

It should take approximately one hour to do one course.

Englishman River Falls Provincial Park

After lunch, take a peaceful forest walk at Englishman River Falls Provincial Park. This provincial park gem features a short loop trail that leads to two stunning waterfalls cascading through a rocky canyon.

The trails are well-marked and relatively easy, making them perfect for families with children. Safe viewing bridges offer fantastic photo opportunities and a chance to admire the power of the falls up close. It’s a refreshing and quiet change of pace from Parksville’s bustling beach scene.

Walking the loop trail should take no more than 2 hours.

Coombs Old Country Market

No visit to Parksville is complete without seeing the famous Coombs Old Country Market, home of the “goats on the roof.” Children are always delighted to see real goats grazing above the market’s rustic rooftops.

Inside, the market is filled with quirky gift items, international snacks, and unique finds that make for great souvenirs. Whether you’re exploring the aisles or snapping photos of rooftop goats, it’s a fun and whimsical stop and a great place to get dinner!

Parksville Community Park

Back in town, Parksville Community Park offers a massive, waterfront playground that’s a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Kids can climb, swing, slide, and cool off at the seasonal splash pad while parents relax nearby, taking in views of the beach and boardwalk.

The park also features wide-open fields, a skate park, and access to the beach, so it’s easy to spend an hour or two here while everyone enjoys some unstructured fun. It's also conveniently located next to the Beach Club Resort, making it an ideal spot to linger.
