Nanaimo, a coastal haven on the east coast of Vancouver Island, invites you to uncover a tapestry of experiences that seamlessly blend nature, history, culture and adventure.
Despite Nanaimo often being a place travellers pass through on their way to other destinations, I'm here to highlight the numerous reasons why doing so means missing out on many fantastic places to explore.

Best of Nanaimo – Top Four Reasons to Visit
1. Outdoor Paradise
Dive into the mesmerizing natural beauty of Nanaimo.
Envision a leisurely stroll along the rugged coastline, where waves crash against the rocks and bald eagles gracefully soar overhead. Wander through the lush forests of a sacred island, each step echoing tales of explorers from times gone by. Discover the awe-inspiring geological marvel of the renowned fault line or unearth fossils nestled within sedimentary rock layers surrounding a prominent waterfall.
Here are my favourite outdoor destinations in Nanaimo, places I go back to time and time again.
Nanaimo is not just a destination; it's a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts seeking solace in the embrace of nature.
2. Historic Wonders
Step back in time as you wander through Nanaimo. Here are my favourite locations that explore the roots that have shaped this coastal gem.
- The Nanaimo Museum is a treasure trove that transcends time. Immerse yourself in the replica coal mine, unravel the intricacies of the local forestry industry, and gain knowledge of the tools and objects used by the early Snunéymuxw First Nation.
- Dive further into Nanaimo's past at The Bastion, an enduring symbol commissioned by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1853. Initially a defensive structure, this waterfront sentinel evolved into a temporary jail before transforming into a museum, now open seasonally. With each visit, The Bastion breathes life into Nanaimo's history, offering a fascinating glimpse into its evolution over the years.
- Venture into the woodlands of south Nanaimo and discover Petroglyph Provincial Park, where a short walk unveils an extraordinary concentration of Indigenous rock carvings dating back over 1,000 years. These captivating depictions of wolf-like creatures, fish, and human figures tell tales of ancient mysteries and places of power. Interpretive panels guide you through the significance of these carvings, connecting you with the spiritual and cultural essence of Nanaimo's indigenous heritage.
- Witness the most complete above-ground remains of a historic coal mine on Vancouver Island. Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park is where you'll find a meticulously restored headframe and tipple. This historic gem echoes the bygone era when coal was loaded into railroad cars, marking a pivotal chapter in Nanaimo's industrial history.
As you wander through these locations, you learn that Nanaimo isn't just a hub city; it's a place where history unfolds with every step.
3. Arts and Culture Hub
Immerse yourself in Nanaimo's vibrant arts and cultural scene.
- Embark on the Cedar Yellow Point Artisan Trail loop for an authentic encounter with local artisans. This drive takes you to farms and artists' studios, providing a straightforward exploration of Nanaimo's local produce and vibrant art scene. Expect to visit picturesque farms, artisan studios, farmer markets, pubs, and cafes. There is typically a ‘Christmas Tour' and a ‘Summer Tour' each year.
- The Nanaimo Art Gallery is a distinctive force in their region, reshaping contemporary and indigenous art perceptions. Employing an inquiry-based approach, the gallery weaves a unique and interconnected experience through all its activities.
- View the many beautiful totem poles around the city. Here are a few of my favourite locations to do so:
- The Welcome Pole at Maffeo Sutton Park. This 49-foot-tall carving by Snuneymuxw Master Carver Noel Brown stands at Spirit Square.
- Fallen Totem Poles at Bowen Park. These totem poles once stood in Bowen Park for several decades. As they aged, they were laid down to decay and return to the earth slowly. You can find them near the duck pond.
- Totems at Departure Bay Beach
- Newcastle Island
- Nanaimo should be called the ‘City of Festivals', with its bustling calendar that leaves little room for dull weekends, particularly in the vibrant summer months. Whether it's the exhilarating Dragon Boat races, the eclectic 10-day Fringe festival, the lively night markets, or the family-friendly VIEX, this city has something to offer everyone.
As you explore the local arts and culture scene, you'll find that Nanaimo isn't just a place; it's a canvas waiting for your own story to unfold.
4. Adventure Awaits
Dive into the heartbeat of Nanaimo, the “Harbour City,” where adventure meets the Pacific.
- Kayak through sheltered waters around Newcastle Island. Launch your kayak at Brechin Boat Launch (near the Departure Bay ferry terminal). This spot is a mecca of activity. You'll see float planes taking off and landing, BC ferries docking and leaving port, and boaters launching their vessels (which can be quite entertaining). Please be mindful of all mentioned to make a safe journey.
- Paddleboard with the ocean breeze in your hair. The Cedar boat ramp (at the end of Nelson Road) gives you a protected spot and an easy paddle out to Round Island. To ensure safety, check the Windy app before you go.
- Embark on a thrilling whale-watching tour. This company offers guaranteed whale sightings, or your next trip is free! And the anti-exposure suits they provide help keep you dry and warm, no matter the weather.
- Head to the only registered floating pub in Canada. The Dingy Dock is a unique Nanaimo attraction with a relaxed atmosphere and great pub fare perfect for the whole family. The short ferry ride over is part of the fun!
Nanaimo isn't just an adventure; it's an invitation to unleash your inner explorer.
