The suggested driving and exploration times below are approximate and intended as a guide. Traffic, weather, and your travel pace can all affect the schedule. Feel free to linger a little longer at the places that capture your imagination. The beauty of this journey is that it's yours to experience however you choose.

Depart from Victoria

Start your day bright and early, anticipating the adventure ahead. After a quick breakfast in Victoria, hit the road with coffee and snacks on board and prepare for an epic day of exploration.

I recommend the following quick breakfast spots in Victoria:

  • Rise and Grind Coffee Co. – Known for its high-quality coffee, delicious baked goods, and all-day breakfast sandwiches (1294 Broad St).
  • Hey Happy is known for its expertly crafted espresso drinks and cozy ambiance. It is a must-visit for coffee aficionados (560 Johnson St #122).
  • Union Pacific Coffee Shop is a hidden gem that serves exceptional coffee and mouthwatering pastries in a charming setting (537 Herald St).
Little Niagra Falls at Goldstream Provincial Park. A must see stop on the road trip from Victoria to Tofino. Vancouver Island View

First Stop: Goldstream Provincial Park

Total time: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes (30 Minute Drive; 45-Minutes Exploring)

Just a short drive from Victoria, Goldstream Provincial Park welcomes you with the enchanting sight of Little Niagara Falls.

Named after the famous falls in Ontario (and New York), the Goldstream Park waterfall is nearly as tall. This not-to-be-missed beauty plunges 47.5 meters down a rock cliff into a clear pond below. The moss-covered cavern surrounding the falls makes it feel like you’ve been whisked away to another world.

The drive from downtown Victoria to the Goldstream Day Use Area is just over 19 km. Depending on traffic, it should take you approximately 30 minutes. Add that to your 30-45 minutes at the park, and you should be on your way in just over an hour.

Park near the Visitors Centre at the Day Use Area of Goldstream Park (off Finlayson Arm Road). Follow a trail that leads farther away from the Visitors Centre, under the highway, and through a large drainpipe (depending on the season, your feet might get wet!). Once you emerge from that tunnel, you will see the falls ahead.

Second Stop: Malahat Summit Viewpoint

Total Time: 10 Minute Stop

Take a brief detour to the Malahat viewpoint and treat yourself to panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

As this is a popular place to stop, finding parking can be tricky, especially during the busy summer months. Regardless, pull in for a quick glimpse of the beautiful view!

Watch for the ‘rest area' signs shortly after leaving the Goldstream Park Day Use Area.

The Kinsol Trestle. Vancouver Island View

Third Stop: Kinsol Trestle

Total Time: 1.5 Hours (25 Minute Drive; 1 Hour exploring)

After leaving the Malahat Viewpoint, you will venture on a 25-minute drive to one the tallest freestanding timber trestle structures in the world. Although not a natural wonder, The Kinsol Trestle is a magnificent sight and a must-see spot on your day trip from Victoria to Tofino. The lush greenery and the tranquil Koksilah River surrounding the structure create a picturesque setting worthy of any visit.

The Kinsol Trestle is approximately 1.2 km from the parking lot on the Cowichan Valley Trail. This trail is flat, wide and surfaced with finely crushed gravel, making it wheelchair and stroller accessible. There are also accessible toilet facilities at the parking lot on the north side of the Kinsol Trestle that are open year-round.

From the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1), turn west onto Mill Bay/Shawnigan Lake Road and go all the way into the Village of Shawnigan Lake. Turn right onto Shawnigan Lake Road and follow it until it turns into Renfrew Road. Follow Renfrew Road past the end of the Lake to Gleneagles Road and turn right. The public parking area for the trestle is approximately 550 metres down the road on the right-hand side.

Fourth Stop: Totem Walk

Total Time: 1.5 Hours (30 Minute Drive; 1 Hour Exploring)

As you journey from the Kinsol Trestle to Duncan (26.5km), don't miss the opportunity to explore the Totem Walk. Spend an hour (or less) wandering among intricately carved totem poles, each telling a unique story of Indigenous culture and heritage.

This is a self-guided walk, so you determine the length of time you spend here and how many totems you want to see.

From Highway 1, turn left onto Trunk Road (which turns into Government Street) and then Duncan Street to find a place to park. Parking is typically available around the museum.

Cowichan Valley Lunch Break

Total Time: Your Choice!

Take a break from your travels and indulge in a delicious lunch in Cowichan Valley. With an array of culinary delights to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect spot to refuel before continuing your journey.

My top choices are:

  • Merridale Cidery (in Cobble Hill, so go after the Kinsol Trestle, but before the Totem Walk)
  • Craig Street Brew Pub (in Duncan)
The historic tipple at Morden Colliery Provincial Park in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island View
Morden Mine Tipple

Fifth Stop: Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park

Total Time: 1 Hour (40 Minute Drive; 20 Minutes Exploring)

Step back in time as you explore the remnants of Vancouver Island's coal mining history at Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park. Wander through the old mine site, learn about the industry's impact on the region, and marvel at the historic artifacts on display.

This quick stop is worth the detour. From Hwy 1, turn right onto Morden Road and follow until the end. The driving distance from Duncan to Morden Colliery Historic Park is just over 41km.

Sixth Stop: Little Qualicum Falls

Total Time: 2 Hours (50 Minute Drive; 1 Hour Walk)

Continue your journey to Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park (66km drive), where pristine forests and cascading waterfalls await. Take a leisurely stroll along the park's trails, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and marvel at the beauty of the falls.

For an easy 3km walk, leave from the day-use area and follow the loop trail to view the lower and upper waterfalls. Lookout points are located along the trail and offer spectacular views of the river and the waterfalls. This loop should take approximately 1 hour to complete.

Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park is located 19 km west of Parksville on Highway 4 (Alberni Hwy). Watch for signs along Highway 4. There is also a large sign posted at the park’s entrance.

Seventh Stop: Cathedral Grove

Total Time: 1 Hour and 15 Minutes (11 Minute Drive; under 1 Hour Exploring)

Venture into the heart of MacMillan Provincial Park and discover the majestic beauty of Cathedral Grove. Spend an hour wandering amidst ancient Douglas fir and red cedar trees, feeling dwarfed by their towering presence.

This a must-visit gem on Vancouver Island. It offers an enchanting experience for nature enthusiasts and allows visitors the easiest opportunity to wander through an old-growth forest.

MacMillan Provincial Park is located on Highway 4, 11 km from Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. Immediately after Cameron Lake, watch for park signs and a congregation of cars.

Eighth Stop: Sproat Lake Provincial Park

Total Time: 1 Hour (30 Minute Drive; 30 Minutes Exploring)

Journey to Sproat Lake Provincial Park (30km) and uncover the mysteries of ancient petroglyphs etched into stone. Spend under an hour exploring these remarkable carvings, which are a testament to the rich history of the First Nations people.

A 0.5 km trail leads from the main parking lot at the day-use area along the lake to a small pier at the park's east end. At the pier, visitors can view the panel of prehistoric petroglyphs, considered one of the finest in British Columbia.

Sproat Lake Park is 13 km northwest of Port Alberni on Highway 4. As you exit Port Alberni, look for park signs.

Snack or Dinner Break near Sproat Lake

Just past Sproat Lake Provincial Park, you can find Della's Cafe at Sproat Lake Landing Resort. This cafe makes delicious paninis, salads, grab-and-go fruit and veggie trays, pastries and much more. It's the perfect pit stop if you are feeling hungry.

Wally Creek is a must-see stop on the road trip from Nanaimo to Tofino. Vancouver Island View.
Wally Creek

Ninth Stop: Wally Creek

Total Time: 1 Hour (33 Minute Drive; 30 Minutes Exploring)

The last natural wonder on the list of stops should include Wally Creek, a 43 km drive from Sproat Lake Provincial Park. Spend 30 minutes (or less) soaking in the serenity of this hidden gem.

Wally Creek can be found via a pull-out on the right-hand side of the highway (when coming from Port Alberni). You will see a group of many large rocks, small turquoise-coloured pools (popular swimming spots in the summer), and a gathering of people.

Final Stretch to Tofino: As the sun begins to set, embark on the final leg of your journey towards Tofino (69.5 km; approximately 1 hour drive). With memories of the day's adventures fresh in your mind, anticipate the magic that awaits you on the rugged shores of Vancouver Island's west coast.
