A Bit of History

Crofton's origins trace back to a small settlement called Osborne Bay, established by pioneering families in the mid-1800s. These early settlers worked on land and timber claims granted by the government, shaping the community's beginnings. Everything changed, however, in the late 1800s with the arrival of Henry Croft, a resourceful entrepreneur from Australia.

Croft, already successful from his ventures at the Lenora mine on Mount Sicker, saw potential in Osborne Bay. By 1902, his mining operations were booming, producing more ore than the available transport could manage. Recognizing an opportunity, Croft purchased the Osborne Bay townsite, envisioning a thriving industrial hub with a copper smelter and housing for his workers.

For a few years, Crofton flourished. But in 1908, a sharp drop in copper prices forced the mine to close, leaving residents to turn to the island’s logging and fishing industries. Crofton’s economy saw another major revival in 1956 with the opening of a large pulp and paper mill. The town’s deep-sea port was key in attracting this new industry, transforming Crofton once again.

This easy, scenic path along the water’s edge is a must for any visit to Crofton. Enjoy an oceanside stroll as you take in views of Salt Spring Island and the ever-changing colours of Osborne Bay. Benches along the way make it ideal for a relaxed afternoon with family or friends.

The kilometre-long boardwalk along the foreshore is a delight and is wheelchair accessible. Keep your eyes open for sealife and birds. While there, we saw Oyster Catchers with their distinctive orange eyes and beaks, along with various ducks and many other seabirds.

The Black Sand Beach

One of Crofton’s most fascinating features is its unique black sand beach, located near the Seawalk. If you start your walk near the ferry terminal, the black sand is more rocky and coarse. The further along you go and closer to Crofton Beach Park, the sand is much finer.

The dark colour comes from remnants of a historic copper smelter that was active in the early 1900s. The smelter produced black slag, which forms part of the beach's distinctive appearance. Because of its origin, it's not the type of sand you run on barefoot or dig your toes into. Even the fine sand can feel sharp on your feet.

Explore the Small Town

Crofton offers an array of small-town experiences. During the summer, explore the quaint Olde School House Museum. This small waterfront museum showcases the mining and forest industries in the local area.

Head into the Osborne Bay Pub for a delicious meal! This family-friendly establishment is known for its live music, welcoming environment and friendly service. From burgers to soups, chowders and salads, everything we ordered on our recent visit was incredible. It's worth the pitstop when driving through North Cowichan.

Crofton Ferry to Salt Spring Island

Crofton is one of the main ferry access points to Salt Spring Island, with regular service to Vesuvius Bay. The ferry ride offers beautiful views and provides an easy gateway to exploring Salt Spring's markets, art galleries, and natural attractions.

Crofton Lake Trail
