Top Things to See and Do During a Parksville Fall Getaway

With its beautiful beaches, lush forests, and mild autumn weather, Parksville is ideal for outdoor activities and seasonal experiences. Here’s how to make the most of your Parksville fall getaway.

1. Stroll Along Parksville Beach

Autumn transforms Parksville Beach into a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy long, quiet walks along the shoreline. The views are spectacular, especially at low tide when the expansive sandy flats emerge, creating the perfect setting for birdwatching or a quiet picnic. Fall sunsets over the water are especially stunning, with golden hues reflecting on the ocean. While walking along the boardwalk, head into Parksville Community Park to enjoy the fall foliage or perhaps use the outdoor exercise equipment to get your heart pumping.

2. Explore Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park

A short five-minute drive from The Beach Club Resort, Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is one of Parksville’s top attractions. Fall is the perfect time to visit, as the park’s sprawling beach and surrounding forest trails are less crowded. The flat, easy trails along the beach and through the forest make it a great spot for a leisurely afternoon walk. While in the area, pop into the Black Goose Inn, a restaurant inside an old character house built in 1921. Enjoy English fare and a pint, or perhaps a traditional High Tea.

3. Hike Through Englishman River Falls Provincial Park

Autumn rains bring Englishman River Falls to life, creating powerful cascades and stunning photo opportunities. The park’s well-maintained trails lead you through old-growth forests adorned in fall colours, making it a great place to experience Vancouver Island’s autumn beauty. The falls are a 20-minute drive from Parksville and offer a refreshing escape into nature. If finding fall foliage is what you are after, Vancouver Island has plenty of amazing spots to explore.

4. Shopping in Qualicum Beach

For those who love discovering unique treasures, shopping in nearby Qualicum Beach offers a delightful mix of charm and character. The town has quaint boutiques, artisan shops, and galleries where local craftsmanship shines. Whether you’re hunting for handcrafted jewelry, locally made art, or distinctive clothing, the shops of Qualicum Beach provide a cozy blend of creativity and style. Take time to stroll the streets, popping into a mix of vintage stores and modern retailers. The entire town feels like a hidden gem waiting to be explored. It's one of my absolute favourite places to shop on Vancouver Island.

5. View Wildlife

The salmon run is a much-loved fall activity for us locals to witness and something we look forward to every year. The Parksville area has a few great spots to witness this natural phenomenon. At Top Bridge Park, just down the road from The Beach Club Resort, you can walk across the suspension bridge spanning the Englishman River and head down to the shoreline. You can often spot jumping salmon right from the bridge as well. The Big Qualicum River Hatchery is one of my favourite local places to view the salmon run. This area is a hotspot for black bears hoping for an easy meal.

Indoor Fall Activities and Comforts

While the outdoors are undoubtedly the main draw of Parksville, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a cozy fall getaway indoors, especially when staying at The Beach Club Resort.

1. Relax at the Stonewater Spa

Fall is the perfect time to pamper yourself, and The Beach Club Resort’s Stonewater Spa is the ideal spot to unwind. Offering a wide range of treatments, including relaxing massages, rejuvenating facials, and body wraps, the spa allows you to indulge in pure relaxation. After a day exploring the outdoors, the spa provides the perfect opportunity to restore both body and mind.

2. Savour Fall Flavours at The Resort Restaurant & Lounge

Located within The Beach Club Resort, the onsite Restaurant & Lounge offers a dining experience that celebrates local, seasonal ingredients. In autumn, the menu features comforting dishes that highlight the flavours of the season, such as roasted root vegetables, fresh seafood, and hearty soups. With floor-to-ceiling windows, you can enjoy panoramic ocean views while indulging in a cozy romantic meal in front of the fireplace.

3. Discover Local Art and History

On a cool, rainy day, consider visiting the McMillan Arts Centre in nearby Qualicum Beach. The centre features rotating exhibits by local artists and offers workshops where you can try your hand at creating your own art. Additionally, the Parksville Museum showcases the area’s rich history, with heritage buildings and artifacts that tell the story of Vancouver Island’s past. (Please note that the museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

4. Discover a Local Brew

The area has three breweries that are popular spots for both locals and visitors, offering a range of beers and often showcasing the unique flavours of Vancouver Island. Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company is known for its variety of craft beers and a welcoming atmosphere. Rusted Rake Brewing Co., located in nearby Nanoose Bay, is a local favourite focusing on quality brews and community vibes. The newest on the scene is the delightful Fern + Cedar in Qualicum Beach, offering a unique blend of brewery and restaurant experiences.

Located 30 minutes from Parksville, Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park is home to some of the largest and oldest trees on Vancouver Island. Fall is an especially magical time to visit, as the towering Douglas firs and red cedars stand against a backdrop of colourful autumn leaves. The short walking trails and accessible boardwalks make it easy to explore this ancient forest.

2. Visit Coombs Old Country Market

Famous for its goats on the roof, the Coombs Old Country Market is a quirky and fun stop just outside of Parksville. The market is stocked with local produce, artisan goods, and seasonal treats. After browsing the shops, enjoy a freshly baked pastry or a hot cup of coffee on the market’s charming outdoor patio.

3. Horne Lake Caves

For adventure seekers, a guided tour of Horne Lake Caves offers a thrilling experience. Just 35 minutes from Parksville, the caves provide an exciting opportunity to explore Vancouver Island’s underground world. With tours available for all skill levels, from easy walking tours to more advanced spelunking adventures, it’s a great way to add some excitement to your getaway.
